In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, without immediately provide further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
This event occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key developments preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
